About the role

Department: Data Intelligence and Governance Group
Reporting To: Lead Data Engineer
Location: Kosmosdal (Hybrid)

What will you do?

The Data Engineer plays a critical role in building, maintaining, and optimising MiWay’s data pipelines and data platforms that support enterprise reporting, analytics, and decision-making.
Reporting into the Lead Data Engineer, this role focuses on hands-on delivery and operational excellence within the data ecosystem. The objective is to ensure data is accurately ingested, transformed, structured, and made available in a consistent and scalable manner, supporting reporting, BI, actuarial, and analytical use cases.
The current reporting estate runs on the Microsoft BI stack: TIA (Oracle) as the core policy administration source, an on-premise SQL Server data warehouse, SSIS integration, SSAS cubes, and SSRS and Power BI reporting. From day one this role is accountable for keeping that estate stable, accurate and performant.
In parallel, you will contribute to the implementation of modern data engineering patterns, including the Medallion Architecture, and to the cloud and data platform modernisation programme that will progressively replace the legacy workloads. Cloud skills will be developed on the job as the platform evolves.

What will make you successful in this role?

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or appropriate diploma/certification in Computer Science, Information Systems,
Data Engineering, or a related quantitative discipline.

Minimum Experience

•    5+ years’ experience in a Data Engineering, BI/ETL development, or similar role, with hands-on production experience across the Microsoft BI stack (SQL Server, SSIS, SSAS, SSRS) and Power BI.
•    Strong T-SQL and working PL/SQL, with experience sourcing data from Oracle-based operational systems.
•    Practical experience within Short-Term Insurance, Financial Services, or a closely related regulated industry.
•    Hands-on experience working with TIA and its data structures (highly advantageous).
•    Exposure to cloud data platforms such as Azure, AWS or Snowflake (a strong plus, not a requirement). A demonstrable appetite to learn these as we modernise is required.
•    Experience contributing to data platform, data warehouse, or cloud migration initiatives (advantageous).

Deliverables

The Data Engineer will support the ongoing development and optimisation of MiWay’s data ecosystem in line with the enterprise data architecture. Key deliverables include:

•    Legacy Estate Support: Maintain, support and enhance the existing SSIS packages, SSAS cubes and SSRS/Power BI reporting, ensuring scheduled loads complete reliably and reporting SLAs are met.
•    Data Pipeline Development: Design and maintain reliable, well-documented ETL/ELT pipelines across multiple source systems, including TIA (Oracle) and the SQL Server data warehouse.
•    Data Modelling: Maintain the existing dimensional models and cubes that underpin current reporting, and build curated data structures aligned to the Bronze, Silver, and Gold layers of the Medallion Architecture as the platform modernises.
•    Cloud Enablement: Contribute to cloud migration initiatives and the modernisation of legacy data workloads within AWS or Azure-based environments, building cloud capability progressively.
•    Performance Optimisation: Optimise T-SQL queries, SSIS packages, cube processing, transformations and storage strategies to ensure efficient data processing and reporting performance.
•    Data Quality and Controls: Implement validation, reconciliation, and monitoring checks to ensure trusted and business-ready data assets.

Competencies Requires

Essential

•    Advanced T-SQL and strong SQL Server data warehousing skills; working PL/SQL for Oracle sources.
•    Hands-on SSIS development and support (package design, deployment, scheduling, troubleshooting).
•    SSAS cube development and maintenance (tabular and/or multidimensional), including DAX or MDX.
•    SSRS report development and Power BI semantic modelling (star schemas, measures, row-level security).
•    Strong understanding of data engineering, data warehousing, and ETL/ELT frameworks, including dimensional modelling.
•    Familiarity with production data environments, scheduling and release practices.

Advantageous

•    Exposure to cloud data platforms (Azure, AWS or Snowflake) and Medallion/lakehouse patterns.
•    Understanding of on-premise and cloud-based architectures and integration patterns.
•    Exposure to core insurance administration systems (e.g. TIA) is highly advantageous.
