Tech Specialist: Risk Analysis & Advice - Hydrology

What will you do?

Provide all the divisions within Santam (including the surveyors and external business partners) with sound technical consulting and analytic support, via various platforms, which will encompass flood and storm sea surge, structures, geology, Geographic Info Systems (GIS), climate risk identification and profiling. This will include macro and micro risk profiling, hazard and exposure management, data mining, field work, presentations, technical training and collaborations with scientific, research and governmental bodies.

 

KNOWLEDGE
 

  • GIS Arc 10 literate (including applications and delivery)
  • Must be able to read, assimilate and analyse technical reports (technical research)
  • Climatology (must have a very good general understanding, including knowledge of climate systems with regard to climate change)
  • Hydrology (must be able to read and understand reports and have a good understanding of flood lines/ flood plains and catchments)
  • Geology (must have a very good understanding of geological related risk associated with structures and the interpretation of resulting damages)
  • Must be on par with the latest research trends
  • Data management 
  • Strong statistical analysis

What will make you successful in this role?

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

 

  • BEng degree or equivalent in the built or scientific environment
  • Relevant postgraduate qualification would be to your advantage
  • Professionally registered or working towards registration (ECSA)
  • 5-8 years’ experience with an emphasis on flood hazard management, numerical flood modeling, dams, hydrology, storm water systems and water resource management
  • Well-developed understanding around other relevant civil engineering disciplines with a strong focus on geology and geotechnics
  • Strong statistical background
  • Advanced Geographic Information Systems (GIS) experience required
  • A well-developed general understanding of climatology
