Financial Crime Officer: Group Legal, Compliance and Financial Crime

The Group Office provides strategic direction and support to the five clusters, assisting them in realising their strategies and meeting their business objectives. The Group Office is responsible for governance and for the Group's centralised functions, which include: Finance, Actuarial and Risk Management, Strategy, Human Resources, Market Development and Sustainability.

 

What will you do?

Assist and support the Sanlam Limited in effectively managing Group wide Financial Crime risk and comply with related country legislation. Responsible for developing and overseeing the financial crime and fraud prevention framework, designed to ensure Sanlam Limited and its subsidiaries are compliant, protected from risk and loss from financial crime.

What will make you successful in this role?

Risk Governance:

  • Responsible for identifying, preventing and mitigating financial crimes such as fraud, corruption, money laundering and terrorist financing
  • Conduct investigations and implement effective fraud prevention measures 
  • Design and review financial crime policies, processes and procedures to ensure they meet expectations including regulatory requirements;
  • Provide second line monitoring and testing of financial crime risk
  • Work with Learning & Development and Internal Communications teams to design and implement appropriate financial crime education, learning and communication for employees
  • Provide an advisory role for the business as the SME on Financial Crime;
  • Provide advice, input, and guidance on financial crime controls in respect of minimum standards, strategies, projects, plans, initiatives, reporting, and other relevant activities
  • Stay abreast of key regulatory updates and developments to enable implementation across the applicable Sanlam businesses 
  • Make key contributions towards the maintenance of the financial crime framework by conducting research and analysis and staying abreast of new or amended legislation to align local requirements and international best practices, as applicable
  • Provide input into key reports and submissions to regulatory and enforcement agencies, industry bodies, internal committees, the executive committee and ultimately, the board. 

Qualification and Experience

  • Degree in Law, Finance, Accounting or Audit 
  • Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist / Certified Fraud Examiner certification is beneficial
  • Broader financial crime compliance knowledge and experience an advantage
  • At least 5 years’ experience in financial crime compliance, fraud risk management, policy drafting and monitoring with experience in a similar role 
  • Good working knowledge of the financial sector environment and procedures. Experience in Insurance, Asset Management, and Investments an advantage 
  • In depth knowledge and understanding of the legislative and regulatory requirements as they relate to financial crime compliance
