Who are we?

The Group's four business clusters (Sanlam Life and Savings, Sanlam Investment Group, Sanlam Emerging Markets and Santam) house the Group's business operations. The Group Office provides strategic direction and support to the four clusters, assisting them in realising their strategies and meeting their business objectives. The Group Office is responsible for governance and for the Group's centralised functions, which include: Finance, Actuarial and Risk Management, Strategy, Human Resources, Market Development and Brand Services.


What will you do?

Responsible for creating and presenting a consistently applied investment message to the investment community on behalf of the company. Monitors operational and financial performance and develops investor relations messages based on these changes. Provides feedback to management regarding the investment community’s opinions and perception regarding the company’s performance. Represents the views of the investment community to management in the development of corporate strategy. Maintains a company investor relations plan and creates a mix of shareholders through a variety of targeting initiatives. Monitors performance metrics and performs a comprehensive competitive analysis Oversees the production financial reports.


The Investor Relations Manager (“IR”) is responsible for supporting the development and execution of the IR strategy, including an effective annual programme of IR activities, targeting the buy and sell side financial communities across geographies (predominantly South Africa, UK, US and Europe).

What will make you successful in this role?

Key accountabilities of the role include:

  • Supporting engagements with the investor community to ensure that Sanlam’s business strategy and strategic progress is understood by the analyst and investor community.
  • Supporting in creating and presenting a consistently applied investment message to the investment community on behalf of the Group.
  • Monitor operational and financial performance and develop investor relations messages based on these changes. 
  • Collate feedback regarding the investment community’s opinions and perception regarding the Group’s performance. 
  • Maintain company investor relations plan and create a mix of shareholders through a variety of targeting initiatives. 
  • Monitor performance metrics and perform a comprehensive competitor analysis. 
  • Support the production of the interim results announcement, annual integrated report and annual financial statements.
  • Support the establishment of the processes and systems to build a “best in class” IR function.
  • Preparation of compelling investor presentations.
  • Contribute to effective results conference calls and management speeches.
  • Support the management of relationships with analysts, investors and prospective targets, enabling them to understand and fully appreciate the Group’s performance and potential, and thereby ensure that there is a fair reflection of the Group’s value in the share price.
  • Prepare presentations for investors (e.g. investor conferences, roadshows) that are informative and accurate, and relevant to the current environment.
  • Strategic & Technical
    • Supporting with day-to-day contact with current and potential institutional investors and sell-side analysts across all relevant geographic markets. 
    • Supporting in the provision of clear and appropriate guidance about the Group’s long-term strategy and historical performance with the aim of maintaining/generating informed interest and ensuring accurate interpretation of Sanlam’s current and expected results.
    • Maintaining a knowledge of the actual and potential investor base and the key characteristics of each segment and considering the current weighting of institutional investors and the likely source of future investor capital.
    • Supporting in identifying new sources of investment into Sanlam.
    • Build financial models capturing key metrics for Sanlam and the peer group using Sanlam internal reporting system and publicly available peer disclosures.
    • Assist in automating IR reporting functions and communications.
  • Leadership & Gravitas
    • Assist in defining and delivering of the strategy for a proactive IR programme, covering both buy side and sell side audiences in all relevant markets; anticipating investors’ concerns regarding Sanlam’s activities, assisting in the definition of the content of communications and prioritising activity accordingly.
    • Supporting investor activities and ensuring all elements of the IR programme are delivered to a consistently high standard.
    • Developing a range of key IR measures and benchmarking company performance against other leading / competitor companies.
  • Communication & Advisory
    • The role requires strong communication skills in order to build strong relationships through dealing openly, fairly and consistently with individuals across Sanlam and with external parties. 
    • Consistency of messaging is imperative across the IR/media functions. This role therefore needs to maintain excellent working relationships within the wider communications team to ensure that each member of the team is aware of the latest position on any particular topic.

Qualifications and Experience

  • University degree, ideally with some form of post-graduate financial qualification, e.g. MBA, CA(SA), Actuary, CFA.
  • 4 to 6 years experience
  • Previous IR experience will be an advantage.
  • Stakeholder engagement: The role is required to have a reasonable understanding of how external stakeholders will perceive decisions and actions of Sanlam and to support the development of appropriate responses and programmes to deal with these. 
  • Market knowledge – Candidates should have a good understanding of the investment community in Sanlam’s main markets and an understanding of the Financial Services sector.
