Location:

Bellville, Western Cape, ZA

Company:  Sanlam Group

Who are we?

Sanlam Life and Savings (SLS) is focused on serving our retail and corporate clients in South Africa and further developing our strategic advantages in the South African market. Sanlam Life and Savings consists of the following business units Retail Mass, Corporate, Risk and Savings, Glacier and various business enabling functions. The Sanlam Life and Savings Office provides strategic direction, coordination and support to the four clusters, as well as performing governance oversight that includes assurance provided by second line of defense functions in SLS, to enable us to meet our business objectives.

What will you do?

The Config / DevOps Engineer is responsible for industrializing and enabling reliable delivery (DevOps industrialization) across the Microsoft Dynamics 365, Power Platform, and Azure integration landscape. The role focuses on establishing and operating repeatable, governed ALM and CI/CD pipelines, configuration management practices, and quality gates that allow multiple delivery teams across our business to move changes safely across environments.

Working under the direction of the Delivery Manager and in close partnership with Technical Leads, QA Automation, and the SGT platform teams, the role translates platform standards and architecture guidance into practical deployment pipelines, configuration patterns, and operational controls, strengthening reliability, traceability, and time‑to‑release across squads.

What will make you successful in this role?

Role Requirements:

Output/Core Tasks:

Azure landing Zone

•    The ability to create a strong developer experience for all CI/CD-related work, enabling the team to easily build solutions and adopt standards in their day-to-day activities.
•    Understanding how on-premises environments and cloud platforms (AWS & Azure) communicate with each other.
•    Good understanding of networking and how it influences the design of DevOps processes.
•    Understanding how to optimize costs through the appropriate selection of infrastructure configurations that best fit the intended purpose.

Configuration & ALM (Power Platform/D365)

•    Own the Power Platform/Dynamics 365 ALM path: managed vs. unmanaged solution strategy, connection references, environment variables, and solution aware pipelines for safe promotion across environments.
•    Implement governed, repeatable deployments of D365/Dataverse solutions (Dev → Test → Prod) using native Power Platform Pipelines and/or Azure DevOps, ensuring traceability, approvals, and audit-ready artifact management.
•    Enforce Dataverse best practices for supportability/performance (entity/table design, plug in/extensibility safety), and maintain configuration catalogs, change logs, and rollback plans.

CI/CD Engineering (Azure DevOps)

•    Design YAML-first pipelines: PR validation (build, lint, SAST), CI (unit + integration tests), CD (staged releases, approvals), and automated rollbacks; align to the Azure DevOps baseline architecture.
•    Parameterize environments and secrets (Key Vault/App Config); standardize reusable templates for squads (build, test, deploy) to reduce pipeline drift.
•    Integrate quality assurance controls into CI/CD (break-the-build for critical findings; nvironment-scoped enforcement in CD) following AWS Well-Architected DevOps guidance.

Integration Platform Enablement (APIM, Logic Apps, Functions)

•    Govern Azure API Management (APIM) topology and policies (auth, throttling, transformation, versioning); drive API first standards with REST design conventions for resource naming, error semantics, and versioning.
•    Industrialize Logic Apps workflow release (DevOps setup, testing, deployment) and Azure Functions delivery (including Durable Functions orchestration when stateful patterns are required).
•    Provide self-service deployment blueprints and reference implementations (APIM policy pacs, Logic App templates, Functions scaffolds) consumable by Full Stack Developers (Enterprise/Solution Integration).

Outputs//Tasks

Testing, Quality Gates & Release Safety

•    Embed integration tests that validate cross-service interactions and data flows (APIs, queues, Dataverse) and run them in CI with optimized, isolated test environments; shift enforcement to CD for environment specific checks.
•    Partner with Automation Testers to ensure pipelines expose hooks for unit/contract/integration/perf tests and that UAT promotions carry verifiable evidence.

Observability, Reliability & Ops Readiness

•    Implement logs/metrics/traces (App Insights/Log Analytics) with correlation across APIM, Logic Apps, Functions, and D365 components; surface dashboards, alerts, and SLO tracking squads.
•    Maintain runbooks, incident response playbooks, and post incident review templates; automate diagnostics capture in pipelines and releases.

Governance, Security & Documentation

•    Enforce least privilege and secret management in pipelines and services; standardize approval gates and segregation of duties.
•    Maintain developer/platform standards: API specs, ALM checklists, pipeline templates, and configuration guides; ensure REST/API and ALM conformance during design reviews with the Solution Architect.

Experience, Qualifications and Competencies

Experience

•    8+ years total in software delivery with 4+ years specializing in DevOps/Platform Engineering and Power Platform/D365 configuration in enterprise environments. Proven ownership of Power Platform ALM (solutions, environment strategy, pipelines) and Azure DevOps pipelines for multi-releases.
•    Hands on governance of APIM policies, Logic Apps deployments, and Functions (incl. Durable) in production; ability to choose patterns (workflow vs. code orchestration) based on latency/state/operability.
•    Demonstrated embedding of integration testing and QA controls into CI/CD with measurable reductions in defect escape and lead time (experience aligned to AWS Well-Architected QA guidance).
•    Track record instrumenting observability and creating runbooks/dashboards/alerts that shorten MTTR and improve SLO compliance.

Qualifications

•    Bachelor’s degree in  Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent experience.
•    Preferred Microsoft certifications: AZ 204 (Azure Developer) and/or AZ 400 (DevOps Engineer); Power Platform credentials related to ALM/functional consultant tracks. (Alignment to Azure DevOps and Power Platform pipelines guidance.)
•    Training/experience with REST API design and Azure API Management operations is a plus.

Competencies

Technical

•    Power Platform/D365 ALM mastery: solutions, connection references, environment variables, solution aware pipelines, managed/unmanaged strategy, deployment orchestration.
•    Azure DevOps CI/CD: YAML pipelines, environment approvals, artifact/versioning strategy, security scans, test orchestration, and pipeline templates for reuse.
•    Integration platform: APIM (policy authoring, versioning, security), Logic Apps (workflow design, DevOps deployment), Azure Functions/Durable Functions (orchestration patterns).
•    Quality & Testing: embedding integration tests and environments, coped  gates; applying QA guidance that balances developer feedback with enforcement at the right pipeline stage.
•    Observability: logs/metrics/traces, dashboards/alerts, trace correlation across services; SLO thinking baked into release decisions.
•    Standards & Security: REST API design conventions; least privilege, secret management, and separation of duties in CI/CD.

Behavioural/Leadership

•    System thinking & pragmatism: balances configuration first practices with code where justified; chooses integration patterns based on operability and lifecycle cost.
•    Influence & enablement: Coaches Full Stack Devs and Testers using templates, policies, and standards; clear documentation and knowledge sharing.
•    Collaboration: works seamlessly with Solution Architect on target architectures, with Automation Testers on quality hooks, and with Analytics Engineers on telemetry contracts.
