Living Benefits Claims First Line Manager: Clinical

The Sanlam Life and Savings Office provides strategic direction, coordination and support to the four clusters, as well as performing governance oversight that includes assurance provided by second line of defense functions in SLS, to enable us to meet our business objectives.
What will you do?
Purpose of the role
- Provide clinical leadership to a team of clinically qualified Claims Consultants within the Living Benefits Claims department.
- Ensure the accurate, consistent, and high‑quality clinical assessment of complex Living Benefit claims.
- Strengthen clinical capability across the team through coaching, mentoring, and continuous professional development.
- Drive operational efficiency by optimising workflows, monitoring performance, and ensuring timely finalisation of claims.
- Uphold clinical governance, technical excellence, and adherence to internal policies and regulatory requirements.
- Foster a culture of client‑centred decision-making and service excellence.
- Collaborate effectively with internal stakeholders, including Operations, Quality Assurance, Legal, Product, and clinical specialists to enable robust, well‑supported claim outcomes.
- Lead initiatives that improve claim quality, consistency, and overall team performance.
- Support organisational goals by contributing clinical insight to projects, process improvements, and change initiatives.
Lead & Develop the Team
- Coach and mentor clinically qualified Claims Consultants.
- Build trust, accountability and a culture of continuous learning.
- Conduct performance and competency reviews.
Provide Clinical & Technical Guidance
- Offer expert clinical input on functional capacity, impairment, disability and recovery patterns.
- Support complex case decisions and act as a technical escalation point.
- Review clinical documentation to ensure accuracy and quality.
Drive Throughput & Workflow Efficiency
- Oversee daily workflow, turnaround times, and productivity.
- Identify and remove bottlenecks to improve claim finalisation rates.
- Use data insights to enhance efficiency.
Ensure Quality & Compliance
- Uphold clinical governance, regulatory requirements and internal claims standards.
- Conduct quality reviews and support continuous process improvement.
Collaborate with Stakeholders
- Engage with underwriting, medical officers, reinsurance, legal and operations teams.
- Ensure clear communication with treating providers and clients.
- Represent the clinical team in cross-functional forums.
Build Capability
- Deliver technical training, case reviews and knowledge sharing sessions.
- Develop tools, guidelines and best practices.
- Stay informed on clinical, industry and legislative trends.
Contribute to Strategy & Improvement
- Support operational and strategic initiatives to enhance client experience, accuracy and turnaround.
- Provide insights based on case trends and assessment outcomes.
What will make you successful in this role?
Qualification
Minimum requirements:
- Degree in Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy.
Knowledge and Experience:
- At least 5 years post-qualification experience, preferably with exposure to functional assessments, return to work planning, or disability management.
- Previous leadership or supervisory experience (formal or informal).
- Strong clinical reasoning and excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience in insurance, claims assessment, case management, or related fields will be advantageous and,
- Exposure to workflow management or operational environments
