Sanlam Life and Savings (SLS) is focused on serving our retail and corporate clients in South Africa and further developing our strategic advantages in the South African market. Sanlam Life and Savings consists of the following business units Retail Mass, Corporate, Risk and Savings, Glacier and various business enabling functions. The Sanlam Life and Savings Office provides strategic direction, coordination and support to the four clusters, as well as performing governance oversight that includes assurance provided by second line of defense functions in SLS, to enable us to meet our business objectives.
What will you do?
The incumbent will be responsible for providing advice and addressing the diverse and complex needs of a variety of business units in SLS on technical regulatory matters that the team is tasked with. Acts as counsel on issues involving company compliance with the most complex governmental and regulatory standards. Reviews legal documentation and provides advice on appropriate action. Oversees legal matters requiring external legal assistance. Provides awareness, training, functional advice, expert legal assurance to the business and general legal support as required from time to time.

Key Responsibilities:
- Provide various business units with on time, up to date understandable, practical and relevant legal advice.
- Facilitate the involvement of external lawyers.
- Consider practical and cost-effective alternatives, risks and trends.
- Identify, consider, and analyse regulatory developments & themes to implement and manage appropriate solutions and provide practical guidance to business.
- Conduct and prepare impact analysis of regulatory changes.
- Research, prepare and draft opinions and memos as required.
- Facilitate training and socialization of key regulatory gaps and changes.
- Represent and participate in industry bodies (e.g. ASISA, IRFA, PLA).
- Manage and provide industry commentary to proposed regulation.
- Collaborate with the SLS and Group legal departments in commercial and litigious matters.
Qualification and Experience:
- LLB or higher law degree.
- Admitted as an Attorney in South Africa.
- At least 7 years post admission experience in Financial Services’ Industry or Legal Practice.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Exposure and knowledge of Pension Funds, Insurance and Financial Sector Legislation (the Insurance Act, the Financial Sector Regulation Act, FAIS, the Interpretation of Statutes Act, the Conduct of Financial Institutions legislation, FICA, NCA, POPIA, Consumer Protection Act, Tax Act).
- Exposure to Investment and Medical Sector Legislation (advantageous).
- Knowledge of retail insurance products (advantageous).
- Contract drafting skills (advantageous).
- Research skills.
- Recognise and appreciate legal and regulatory risks nuanced by proportionally balancing competing interests towards the facilitation of business.
- Ability to analyse and simplify complex data.
- Assimilation and adaptation of new concepts and environment.
- Computer skills (MS Office).
