Sanlam Alternative Investments (SAI)
The purpose Sanlam Alternative Investments (SAI) business is to help build the African continent and make a real sustainable difference in the emerging economies in which we operate in, aligning to the Sanlam Group’s mission of financial inclusion. The SAI business has a broad range of capabilities that include Private Equity, Specialised Finance, Property, Infrastructure and Partnerships. Sanlam is the biggest non-banking financial institution on the continent, operating in Africa for over 100 years.
What will you do?
To assist in expanding the Project Finance and Infrastructure investment business, within South Africa and Africa, for SAI and Sanlam, including:
- Identify, assess and structure infrastructure investments for SAI, Sanlam Group and Sanlam third party clients; the investments could be in debt instruments and/or in equity instruments.
- Ongoing deal management and optimisation of the infrastructure portfolio.
- Provide a specialised infrastructure investments expertise function to the Sanlam Group.
- Assist in management of third-party infrastructure investment funds.
What will make you successful in this role?
- Deal making (i.e. origination of debt-related transactions) including:
- Identifying new opportunities, structure, negotiate terms and execute transactions
- Development and building of new client relationships in order to originate new transactions
- Preparing credit applications investment proposals and credit updates and attend credit meeting to support deals
- Compile written proposals to clients of funding proposals including making marketing presentations to clients and replying to client
- Prepare term sheets to clients that form the basis of legal agreements to be drafted
- Financial Analysis: Expertise in financial modelling of transactions and preparing cashflow projections.
- Market Insight and Economic Analysis: Strong understanding of economic indicators, market dynamics, and industry trends impacting the energy and infrastructure investment landscape
- Ability to liaise with various internal departments (legal, credit risk, treasury, regulatory, exchange control, etc.), and external advisors (lawyers, Auditors, tax advisors, technical advisors etc.) as is necessary to implement deals
- Interacting with other financial institutions and syndication partners in implementing syndicate or club type transactions
- Reviewing and commenting on various legal agreements and relevant transaction documents
- Management of deals through the full transaction life cycle up to maturity
2. Group interaction and functions
- Ongoing interaction within the Debt team
- Ongoing interaction with Sanlam Group, the Sanlam Investment cluster and other clusters – assisting in obtaining Group Buy-in
- Be a centre of expertise for Sanlam Group
3. Portfolio management of invested transactions
- Ongoing management of invested transactions
Qualification and Experience
- Have completed a CA (SA), CFA, relevant Honours or Master’s qualification
- Have at least 2 – 5 years’ relevant experience in the South African market in an origination role
- Have Infrastructure and Project Finance origination and deal structuring experience
- Have experience in CPI linked instruments
- Infrastructure and Project Finance deal experience
