What will you do?
The Tax Advisor will be responsible for tax technical support in relation to South African tax and international tax topics. Based within the central finance function, the role will require regular engagement and good working relationships with other central teams (e.g. Legal & M&A, IT, Distribution & HC) as well as the local finance teams and local tax advisors of the group’s African based operating entities. The successful candidate will report to the Head of Tax for the SanlamAllianz Group.
What will make you successful in this role?
Responsibilities will include, amongst others, the following:
- Advise on the South African and international tax considerations of cross border business restructurings and reorganisations to optimise group efficiency while mitigating risks.
- Advise on the South African and international tax considerations, structuring and implementation of merger and acquisition transactions, including a review of due diligence findings and transaction agreements
- Advise on all international tax related matters (including transfer pricing and Pillar 2 / Global Minimum Tax) in relation to cross-border transactions, services and products.
- Tax disputes:
- Evaluate queries from tax authorities and assist with drafting and review of correspondence with tax authorities across Africa.
- Oversee and manage dispute proceedings with tax authorities in conjunction with local business and local advisors and manage engagement with internal stakeholders.
- Collaborate on developing effective strategies to defend group tax positions successfully.
- Assist with the implementation and documentation of transfer pricing policies throughout the group to ensure compliance with local regulations, in conjunction with local advisors.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of evolving tax legislation across multiple African markets to proactively identify risks and opportunities for the group.
Qualification and Experience
- CA(SA) and/or relevant South African degree / diploma with Taxation as core module (Masters in Tax will be advantageous).
- At least five years’ relevant experience in taxation.
- Proven experience working across multiple tax jurisdictions is highly desirable for navigating complex regulatory environments.
- Familiarity with all major types of taxation including corporate tax, international tax, Pillar 2, transfer pricing, VAT, withholding taxes, and employment taxes is essential.
- Financial services industry experience and experience in dealing with tax authorities in African countries (including SARS) will be advantageous.
