Underwriter (Mid-Corp)

What will you do?
To underwrite new and renewal Mid Corporate Property business within Santam Corporate Property, ensuring sustainable profitability through sound underwriting practices, technical risk assessment.
The role requires strong engagement with brokers and internal stakeholders to optimize risk selection, pricing, and portfolio quality, while ensuring compliance with underwriting mandates and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Underwriting & Risk Management
- Evaluate, price, and underwrite new and renewal mid corporate property risks within mandated authority.
- Conduct detailed risk analysis, incorporating loss history, exposure assessments, and risk engineering insights.
- Prepare and present underwriting submissions, including high-quality written and verbal presentations to management, brokers, and business partners.
- Ensure accurate and timely issuance of policy documentation aligned to underwriting decisions.
- Maintain underwriting discipline through adherence to Santam Corporate Property underwriting guidelines and peer review processes.
- Monitor portfolio performance, ensuring alignment to profitability, growth, and risk appetite objectives.
- Provide technical underwriting input into claims discussions and risk mitigation strategies.
- Contribute to technical discussions and negotiation of policy wordings, ensuring clarity and alignment with risk appetite.
- Perform technical reviews including:
- Risk profiles
- Claims history analyses
- Rating reviews
- Renewal checklists
- Identify underwriting trends and emerging risks to inform pricing, coverage, and portfolio strategy.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, binder agreements, and delegated mandates.
2. Stakeholder & Broker Engagement
- Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers and clients.
- Participate in broker visits, marketing initiatives, and industry engagements to support business development.
- Collaborate closely with:
- Risk Engineering (internal and external)
- Claims teams
- Risk Administration
- Support effective communication across stakeholders to ensure seamless underwriting and placement processes.
Qualifications & Experience
- Minimum 5–7 years’ experience within the mid corporate property market
- Demonstrated experience engaging with:
- Corporate brokers
- Matric (Grade 12) – essential
- Degree in Business, Insurance, or related field – advantageous
- IISA qualification or equivalent professional certification
- RE (Regulatory Examination) qualification – completed
